Abstract: Research on the impact of dietary sugars on health has been controversial and is often confounded by the lack of commonly accepted terminology and the lack of accurate dietary assessment methods to measure human consumption.
Participants in the ILSI North America workshop "Sugars and Health Workshop" established consensus on a variety of terms used within the workshop and discussed the dietary assessment methods related to sugar intake. They used this information in their review of the literature on several issues relating to sugar intake and public guidance; satiety and weight control; diabetes; cardiovascular disease; and dental caries. Though participants did not always agree on the issues, at each section participants made specific suggestions for future research to clarify the relationship between sugars and health.
